An 8 Minute Introduction to Family Promise
Grace House is different because we are a home that does not move from church to church. Volunteers come and spend time with guests at the home in Southbridge, MA. This video is a good introduction to volunteering and the families who stay at shelters such as Grace House.
We Have a New Name!
In February of 2010 the Board of Directors at SIHN came together for a strategic planning process funded by the Greater Worcester Community Foundation. We have churches from as far east as Oxford and as far west as Brimfield and West Brookfield, it was clear we needed a name that accurately spoke of who we are as a network of over 25 congregations.
We are pleased to announce that the new name of SIHN is Family Promise of Southern Worcester County. The shelter will remain the Grace House Shelter. We look forward to strengthening our connection with Family Promise National and the increased visibility and outreach that comes with affiliation with a strong national organization.

Embracing Our Neighbors, Creating Hope
“We are so grateful, I can’t even tell you. We just don’t know what to do, and we don’t want to see my sister and her little baby to be placed far away where we wouldn’t be able to see her. Thank you so much.” — The sister of a young mother when she met with us for an intake at Grace House, after a referral from St. Joseph’s Parish in Charlton.
Keeping families together in times of crisis is a critical step in helping them regain self-sufficiency. Family Promise of Southern Worcester County (FPSWC), is a support network of over 20 local congregations and community organizations providing a safe and secure place for families in transition.
Rooms at Grace House are available to families who may not qualify for placement through the Department of Transitional Assistance due to income, shelter abandonment, or other factors. Our hands-on approach helps families attain financial support, employment, education, and permanent housing, enabling them to become self-sufficient. Families are encouraged to save a significant portion of their income to help with relocation expenses.
An estimated 500 dedicated volunteers, from over 20 local church congregations and community organizations, support FPSWC’s efforts by providing companionship and assistance for families at Grace House.
Our mission at Grace House is to:
- Prevent family homelessness
- Provide shelter during transition
- Offer ongoing support to foster self-sufficiency
